Within what's known as Packer Country -- alluding to the NFL's Green Bay Packers -- the town of Green Bay, founded in 1634, ranks as the oldest community in the Midwest. To the northeast, Door County's scenic limestone cliffs and beaches insulate an array of villages filled with antique shops and art galleries. Surrounding scenic countryside is dotted with small dairy farms and fruit orchards, providing for easy access to quality produce from the "Dairy State." The 75-mile long peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan from the town of Green Bay is aptly nicknamed the "Cape Cod of the Midwest." Summer fun includes golf, hiking, biking, boating and fishing, while winter embraces snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Spectacular regional events include Bayfest and the Heritage Farm Bluegrass Festival in June, the Michicot Fest, the Oneida Pow Wow, and Trutfest in July, Shanty Days Celebraton of the Lake in August and Wet Whistle Wine Festival in September. While large enough to offer a fine selection of accommodations, cultural, and dining options, Green Bay remains small enough to enable friendly encounters with Wisconsin natives.
